At the Port Kaituma waterfront in Region One, Guyana, it appears that no one has yet been caught. Port Kaituma gradually developed from a small Amerindian settlement to a bustling township with the discovery of manganese in Matthew’s Ridge. A canal was cut from the Kaituma River to facilitate a port, and a railway constructed to transport manganese from Matthew’s Ridge to Port Kaituma to Trinidad. Today the waterfront is impeded by squatters, many of whom are vendors. (Photo: Khadija Benn)

Grand Lady in A Constantly Fluid Atmosphere

In the Northwest District of Guyana, a shocking photograph is being circulated of a mature jaguar that was killed and brought out of the mining backdam on an ATV in recent weeks. The animal was apparently roaming in the vicinity of mining camps in the Matthew’s Ridge/Arakaka sub-district, so the miners set about to capturing and killing the jaguar. It is not known what was done with its remains. (Photo: Khadija Benn)

A grand tropical hibiscus flower in Georgetown, Guyana. A mature hibiscus plant will offer perennial blooms that are favourites of hummingbirds.
A girl sits along the narrow jetty in Plastic City, a squatter settlement on the mudflats of Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, Guyana. One of the poorest areas in Guyana, Plastic City may have gotten its name because plastic was the main material used for the original dwellings along the jetty. Today, buildings are condensed, crudely constructed of old wood and zinc scraps, most elevated a few feet off the ground to avoid floodwaters during high tide. Many children in Plastic City attend school, but they often drop out at a young age to work to support the home.
